Regional Collaborators

The Pacific Partnership network is committed to working with others to address bird conservation issues at local, national, regional and global levels.

At the regional level, the Pacific Partnership Secretariat has entered into formal agreements with three regional collaborators, the Pacific Invasives Initiative (PII) based in Auckland, New Zealand; the Pacific Invasives Learning Network (PILN),  based in Samoa; and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Programme (SPREP), also based in Samoa.

BirdLife’s associations with PII and PILN reflect its Partners’ strong emphasis on tackling issues relating to alien invasive species, particularly the depredations caused to endemic bird populations by rats. PII provides peer reviews of project plans for BirdLife-initiated islands’ rat eradication projects together with technical advice and assistance with actual eradication operations. PILN provides a network of liaison among people actively involved in managing the damaging effects of alien invasive species and receives and disseminates pertinent information to the region.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding signed between BirdLife Pacific and SPREP in February 2007, the two organisations have committed themselves to working together to save the region’s endemic avifauna. In October 2007, a joint BirdLife/SPREP Birds Meeting was convened in Papua New Guinea which recommended a range of collaborative measures which BirdLife and SPREP are now addressing jointly.
