BirdLife International has published numerous books over the years. Many of these are still in print and available to buy securely online through nhbs.com, or directly from the publishers.

Birds in Europe

  • Birds in Europe (November 2004) or BiE2 is the second review of the conservation status of all wild birds in Europe. Like its 1994 predecessor, Birds in Europe (BiE1), it identifies priority species (Species of European Conservation Concern, or SPECs) in order that conservation action can be taken to improve their status. The book contains accounts and data for 524 species.

Important Bird Areas in Asia

  • Important Bird Areas in Asia (November 2004) is the first comprehensive inventory of Asia's most important places for birds and biodiversity. It identifies 2,293 sites, covering 7.6% of the region's total land area. The book took eight years to complete, involving hundreds of ornithologists, volunteers and government staff in 28 countries and territories across the entire Asia region.

State of the world's birds 2008

  • This report outlines why birds and biodiversity are important, and examines what we know about the changing state of the world’s birds (STATE), why birds are declining (PRESSURE) and what can be done to improve their status (RESPONSE). It is a synthesis of our knowledge to date and provides a benchmark against which we can assess our efforts to conserve birds and biodiversity into the future.

Important Bird Areas in Africa and associated islands

  • This 1,162 page study took eight years to complete, and is the first ever attempt to list all the sites in the region that are internationally recognised as the most critically important places for bird and biodiversity conservation. (Available through NatureBureau.)

Threatened Birds of the World

  • This mammoth publication from 2000 details the plight of 1,186 globally threatened bird species. (Available through Lynx Edicions.)

BirdLife Conservation Series

  • Important ongoing series which provides inventories and habitat details for endangered species, as well as summaries of current conservation issues in each area.

BirdLife Study Reports

  • A series of reports from BirdLife projects around the world including surveys, expeditions and management guidelines.
